random access memory. what ram meomory you using???

other applications Upgrading the memory I have a hp pavilion a345w and am trying to upgrade it. I have have gift card from wal-mart I would prefer to use but I'm not sure which memory to get for it.
I'm still new at the whole computer upgrading thing, but trying to learn!anyway can... I bought new Ram and now the old ram doesn't work... I just recently bought 2 sticks of 256mb Ram. I need to have 2 sticks of the same Ram to run it. I wanted to upgrade from 512 to 1gig so I have a total of four 256. I put in the new stuff with the old, and it didnt turn on.So I put in the old... Is the Mainboard or RAM burnt? Smoke from RAM or RAM slot...how do I know my mainboard is not burnt? if the mainboard is burnt is it possible the video card or the CPU to be burnt? What is the difference between DDR1 and DDR2? What is the difference between DDR1 and DDR2? Technical help #4: RAM What is exactly RAM? What types of RAM are there? How should I take into account about compatibility (i.e. connections) with the other computer pieces? I used to have 1GB of RAM, what other variables can rate a RAM piece and what is the average? Desktop or Laptop? Which do you prefer using? It can be with regards to typing, browsing, playing, doing office works, watching, etc.
